Dan Walsh: Prints & Multiples
September 16, 2016 - October 22, 2016
521 West 26th Street

Pace Prints is pleased to present Dan Walsh: Prints & Multiples at its 521 West 26th Street gallery, featuring a new edition, a suite of monoprints and artist books. The exhibition will be on view September 16—October 22, with an opening reception Thursday, September 15, 6-8pm.

As Walsh notes, “I paint like a printmaker: in passes.” The artist’s painting and print practices are two parts of a unified whole, informing each other within a codified language of the artist’s own creation. Made using a systematic, grid-based process, the images call to mind the meditative patterns of Tibetan mandalas or rhythmic geometries of textile arts.

In his newest woodcut, Axis (2016), the artist harnesses the reductive printmaking process, altering marks on the matrix with each pass—in this case, drilling successively larger holes in the block. The method is highly process-driven, as once the block is altered no revisions to the image can be made. Each layer is a response to the previous pass, altering the viewer’s perception of primary colors.

Also on view will be a suite of new monoprints by the artist titled Elements. These unique works apply a programmatic approach to exploring the archetypal building blocks of an image—the circle, square and cone; and the primary colors—blue, red and yellow. The set as a whole can be understood as a kind of musical composition where Walsh begins with simplified visual notes and expands on their complexities by applying a set of unexpected permutations.

Dan Walsh was born in 1960 in Philadelphia, PA. He studied at Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts) and Hunter College in New York City. His work has been exhibited in national and international galleries and institutions, including a recent retrospective at Paula Cooper Gallery, New York; the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; and PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City. His prints and limited edition books were the subject of a solo exhibition at the Cabinet des Estampes du Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, in Geneva, Switzerland. He was also included in the Ljubljiana Biennial, Slovenia, and the Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art, France. Walsh was included in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. He lives and works in New York.
