Leonardo Drew, "74P," 2017, pigmented and cast handmade paper with hand applied pigment, 48 x 70 inches
Pace Prints at the IFPDA Print Fair
October 25, 2017 - October 29, 2017
Art Fairs

For the 2017 IFPDA Print Fair, Pace Prints (Booth 403) is pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent works by renowned sculptor Leonardo Drew. The artist’s monumental compositions in handmade paper are at once graphic and haunting. With energetic and strong central “cores” (the cast paper nucleus of each image), Drew’s branch-like marks emanate outward with haloed force. Drew has been exploring the medium of handmade paper since 2012, working with the Pace Paper workshop in Gowanus to translate his varied accumulative sculptural processes to pigmented and cast paper. Of this new body of work, Drew says he is “still bending and challenging the language, always wondering what’s on the other side.” This is the artist’s third solo exhibition with Pace Prints.

Among the new works on display will be two new unique monoprints in blue and black tones, heightening their chromatic effect. In addition, 59P, an edition of four utilizing black, brown and silver, will be the central piece. A grouping of ten small dimensionally cast paper pulp works will be featured in the exhibition as well.

Leonardo Drew will deliver this year’s Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation Lecture at the IFPDA Print Fair, Sunday, October 29, at 11am.

Pace Prints is also proud to release Chuck Close’s most recent large scale Self-Portrait, 2017, a 92-color screenprint. In contrast with past self-portraits, this new print is notable for its luminosity, resulting from Close’s use of a lighter palette and a more open and organic grid. Despite a high level of abstraction, the image is brought into focus by the rendering of the artist’s eyes, which gaze strikingly back at the viewer from behind his glasses. Once again, Close has created a self-portrait that highlights his technical mastery and a unique interpretation of the genre that he has explored throughout his career.
