Lee Ufan

Born 1936, Kyongsangnamdo, Korea.
Lives and works in Kamakura, Japan and Paris, France.

Lee Ufan’s minimalist work serves as a means to engage with the viewer on a visceral as well as metaphysical level. A proponent of the Korean tansaekhwa (monochrome painting) school, the artist presents a gestural mark on paper as an affirmation of existence and the passage of time. Lee complements his artwork with a series of philosophical writings that reflects his education in modern philosophy and Asian metaphysics.
