James Turrell

 – , 2016

Pace Prints is pleased to present James Turrell on view May 13–June 11, 2016 (Extended through July 29) at its 32 East 57th Street gallery. The exhibition will run concurrently with James Turrell: Projections 1967-1968 on view May 6–July 29 at two Pace Gallery locations, 32 East 57th Street and 534 West 25th Street.

The show will include three Turrell editions published by Pace Prints. Aten Reign (2015) is a large-scale archival pigment print in saturated shades of blue and fuchsia. A set of three etchings Suite from Aten Reign (2014) uses the aquatint technique for its inherent transitional light effects. The artist’s first edition with Pace Prints, Suite from Aten Reign (2014), is a set of three Ukiyo-e woodcuts in green, blue and sienna.

“There are major differences of course between color in light and color off of a page,” says Turrell, “The triumphant job of the printers here is to get the sense of light and color that comes out of the paper like it does with the light.”

James Turrell was born in Los Angeles in 1943. He studied psychology and mathematics at Pomona College before receiving his MFA from Claremont Graduate University, becoming a key figure in the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 1960s and 70s. His work centers on the manipulation of light, from projections and sensory deprivation to color fields and site-specific interventions. Turrell is the recipient of numerous awards, including The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1984 and the 2013 National Medal of Arts and has had major retrospectives in museums including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
