ADAA: The Art Show

Chase Hall

 – , 2024

Pace Prints is pleased to present a solo exhibition for The Art Show 2024, featuring a body of new large-scale monoprints by Chase Hall. Pace Prints will exhibit in Booth D2.

Chase Hall’s (b. 1993, St. Paul, Minnesota) practice responds to the human condition and the generational celebrations and developmental experiences encoded throughout American history. He engages with a variety of social and visual systems, each of which intersects with complex trajectories of race, portraiture, hybridity, economics, and personal agency. Hall creates images in which materiality is as crucial to their compositional makeup as their indelible approach to representation in this central body of monoprints made with his inventive use of coffee grounds as pigments and a jig saw relief technique.

Hall’s work is notable for both its conceptual scope and its intimacy. He’s interested in the clash of coffee and cotton, and the tension of black and white, both genetically and socially. The use of brewed and ground coffee carries powerful symbolic weight since it evokes centuries-old geopolitical systems associated with the labor and the commodification of a plant native to Africa, but in Hall’s hands, it also becomes a means to achieve a range of visual textures, and a mark-making vocabulary precipitated on the closeness of touch. Above all, however, it is his improvisational willingness to immerse himself in the indefinable personal hieroglyphics of each picture that gives his work its resonance and impact, while also pushing the potential of coffee, paper, and artistic possibility.
