Pace Prints is pleased to present a selection of recent works by Nina Chanel Abney on view from May 8 – June 14. The installation includes 21 variations of her Soup Kitchen series of painted stainless steel and aluminum multiples alongside a grouping of cast paper collage works. Abney’s recent print edition Magic will also be on view.
Initially presented in her large-scale exhibition at The School in Upstate New York, Abney’s soup cans speak to the commodification of identity present in consumerism. The series echoes Andy Warhol’s critique of mass production, while imbuing his most familiar image with deeper social commentaries. Each multiple variation has a unique expression and is from an edition of 2.
Abney’s Humble Gifts series consists of cast paper collages born out of a collaboration between Pace Prints’ paper shop and print studio. These works were made through a unique process of creating molds from vintage frames and then casting them in paper pulp, to which Abney then adhered hand-cut monoprint collages.
