Tomoo Gokita was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969. He is best known for his black and white work, made with pencil, charcoal, and ink based on found photographs. These unsettling monochromatic pieces gained traction in the late 1990s. However, he also creates more colorful work, such as collages, paintings, stenciled work, and even sculptures. The artist has exhibited internationally in solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Berlin.
