Pace Prints is pleased to present an exhibition of new monoprints by Pat Steir at its 32 East 57th Street Gallery, on view April 7–May 7, 2016 (Extended through June 11), with an opening reception on Wednesday, April 6, 5-7pm.
Pat Steir’s most recent hand-painted monoprints introduce new gestures to her painterly lexicon. In a process informed by decades of printmaking experience, the artist painted unique works on mylar to be silkscreened on totemic sheets of paper. Broad strokes of paint are then applied to the screenprinted surface, creating shimmering veils of color in loops, lines and dabs.
Steir's prolific career has spanned over fifty years. Though rooted in elements of Abstract Expressionism, the artist’s work is decidedly postmodern, influenced by poetry, natural elements, John Cage’s ideas on chance and the I Ching. Often monumental in scale, employing a fastidious, yet seemingly loose use of color, the works are dripping dreamscapes that often reference the meditative and esoteric.
Pat Steir was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1940. She received a BFA from Pratt Institute in 1961. The artist's paintings, prints and wall drawings have been the subject of over 150 solo exhibitions internationally, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, The Brooklyn Museum, Musée d'Art Moderne and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Steir has been making prints with Pace Editions since 1991. She lives and works in New York City.
