Brooklyn-based artist Santi Moix was commissioned to paint frescos throughout the entire interior of a thousand-year-old Romanesque church in Sauri, a town about 3 hours outside of Barcelona. The original bright, religious paintings that earlier painters were commissioned to create to decorate the hundreds of Romanesque churches throughout the Pyrenees have almost entirely been either stolen or sold. Santi is the first artist in a series of artists who will be tasked with revitalizing the churches with new work.
“Everytime I come back to Sauri, I’m overcome with the feeling that nothing ends here, but instead that it’s where all begins. I want the visitors who come to this church to have have an interior experience, that it will be a space to meditate, that will transmit spirituality," says Moix.
