Alfred Jenson was born in Guatemala City in 1903. After elementary school, Jensen traveled and worked as ship’s cabin boy in 1917, where he began his artistic journey by drawing portraits of the passengers and crew. Later, he went on to attend the San Diego Fine Arts School at Balboa Park. in 1926 in studied under Hans Hoffman in Munich, and in 1929 he moved to Paris to study at the Academie Scandinave and learned modern sculpture and painting, under Charles Despiau, and Othon Friesz and Charles Dufresne respectively. By 1951, he was ready to settle, and opened a studio in New York. Jensen abandoned the painterly Abstract Expressionists' gesture in favor of hard-edged geometry. His work is based on theories of color, light, time, architecture, the Mayan calendar, and the I Ching, and can be characterized by geometry, symmetry, and bold impasto color. With the goal of bringing ancient truths into the modern age, Jensen created historically- and mathematically- based compositions. Jensen died in 1981 in Livingston, New Jersey.
