Gagosian Gallery has collaborated with the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation for the first time to present “Composing with Color: Paintings 1962-1963” at their Madison Avenue location. The exhibition focuses on the pivotal two-year period between 1962 and 63 when Frankenthaler moved away from line-based composition and began “composing with color,” leading up to her iconic stain technique.
Frankenthaler has worked with Pace Prints to create four Ukiyo-e plus woodcuts, including “Geisha” (2003), a twenty-three color Ukiyo-e woodcut printed from 15 woodblocks on Torinoko paper and mounted onto Fabriano Classico, as well as “Book of Clouds,” a large-scale print using a combination of aquatint, woodcut and pochoir techniques.
The show will run September 11—October 18, with an opening reception Thursday, September 11th, 6:00-8:00pm.
