Nevelson Chapel nears restoration fundraising goal

Louise Nevelson's 1977 landmark Chapel of the Good Shepherd at St. Peter's Church in Manhattan has nearly reached a three million dollar fundraising goal to finance the restoration of the original Nevelson artworks that adorn it.

A benefit exhibition and gift from Pace Gallery, as well as individual contributions, brings the chapel nearer to completing the third of four phases in its restoration plan, to remove paint added over the decades by caretakers. Those earlier restorations, following Nevelson's own instructions for repainting the sculptures, have caused unforeseen chemical reactions that are deteriorating the works. Finalization of the third phase will complete the physical preservation of the space, which has already been refitted with updated environmental controls, and reopen the chapel to visitors with its intended appearance.
